A Small Disappointment

Hey!

After the national team meeting with the rest of the youth engagement coordinators yesterday, I felt a burst of inspiration.

Later that day, I had to attend a meeting for SCOPE, which is a grassroots-Toronto organization that aims to get more local youth thinking about post-secondary education. This year, I'm their VP of Operations, and we had our first executive meeting Friday night.

For some time now, SCOPE co-founders have been discussing the need for a "groupware" of some sort to a) upload documents, b) communicate with each other. They have their own IT department and the last I heard about a month ago, someone was working on getting this necessary groupware. It was before my participation with TIG, so I didn't say anything at the time.

However, at this current meeting- I decided to bring up the subject of groupware. I tried to pitch TakingITGlobal and it's project pages to the co-founders of SCOPE, highlighting all its features and benefits.

Unfortunately, the response I got from the was very negative. They said that any other groupware is able to do all the things that TIG does, and in addition to that, most other groupware can link directly from their website (http://www.yourscope.ca). This means that they are able to sign in to use the groupware directly from their own website, as opposed to through TIG.

At the time, I did not pursue the cause any further, and I was fairly disappointed.

Now though, I realize many things that I could have done to pitch TIG ProjectPages betters, and I'm just writing to give you guys some advice about them.

Always think about what sets TIG apart from other "groupware" options when you are trying to pitch. In TIG's case, it is the ability to be able to:
A) NETWORK WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS
B) RECRUIT INTERESTED YOUTH
C) PROMOTE EVENTS

SCOPE is looking towards creating non-profit partnerships, getting publicity and promoting two events that they are holding at the end of the year. If I had highlighted these features better, I am sure I would have gotten a much better response.

I'll definitely be better prepared next time, and I hope this helps the rest of you!

You certainly do live and learn.
